Catholic Charities Adult Services has many opportunities for volunteers to work with seniors.  We are looking people interested to work with active, friendly, and fun seniors in their homes to assist with: shopping, housekeeping, reading and writing, and overall companionship.  Contact the Volunteer Coordinator listed above for more information.

NOTE:  WE PROVIDE THE "CALLED TO PROTECT" CLASS PRIOR TO EACH ORIENTATION FROM 12NOON-1:45p. (SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY)
 

All Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older

+We do NOT need any additional volunteers on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day+

 

Person needed to polish donation plaques-

Volunteer needed once every quarter to re-hang & polish plaques

(supplies to be provided)

 

Floor buffers are needed to shine our floors!

This is an on-going position. (IDEALLY either Saturday OR Sunday from 8am-12noon; however, scheduling is flexible)

 

Tour Guides: 

Ideal for existing volunteers who can serve 1-2x a month.


Table Companions:

Sit and visit with residents while eating a meal

 Employment Resource Center:

Also Needed:

1 volunteer to assist with administrative support, filing, light clerical work and assisting residents with computer use. 1 volunteer to teach basic computer skills. Days and hours flexible to meet the convenience of the volunteer. (ON HOLD 11.2011)

 

Clothing Room volunteers: 

(1 additional person weekly)- 

working with residents, distributing clothing and handling paperwork. Time: 7p-8p

(1 person every other week)

Data Entry Volunteer:

Needed two days per week to enter client data into the new HMIS system, as well as light filing. Requires attention to detail and basic computer skills. The schedule is flexible, but preferably between the hours of 9:30 to 5:30

M-F. This is an on-going position.

Front Desk Volunteers:

Friday from 4pm-6pm or 5pm-7pm

answer phones, help residents with mail/sack lunches, hand out supplies, assist with SH Orientation (at times)

 

 

Levels Coach: (additional training required)
(2)-needed weekly either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday (late afternoon/early evening)
Involves: Direct contact with residents -ability to act as both mentor and coach while guiding residents toward sustainable employment, mental perseverance and benefit acquisition
Requires: Attention to detail, dealing with facts, good personal boundaries (ON HOLD 11.2011)
 
Resource Advocate: (additional training required)

1 volunteer needed weekly (6:00-8pm). Duties: Assist residents in navigating the Resource Center and internet to find jobs, benefits, and housing. (ON HOLD 11.2011)

Case Aide: (additional training required)

3 hour shift: Daytime-Any day Monday through Saturday

Involves: Direct contact with residents and ability to elicit personal information from reluctant clients

Desirable Background: Nursing/mental health/social services, ideal for retired RN, counselor/therapist, etc

Teachers Needed:

Involves teaching a class size of approx 3-20ppl for 30-60 minutes. Desirable background: History or interest in teaching, public speaking, or an applicable skill-set or knowledge-base.

Examples may include the following:

            Taking Care of Me (Healthy Eating,Fitness,Attitude,Emotional

            Health)
            Conflict Resolution (at home and in the workplace)
            Communication and Communication Styles
            Photography 
            Domestic Violence and Homelessness
            Arts & Crafts (self-expression,exploration)-
            knitting, scrapbooking, drawing/sketching, quilting
            Creative Writing, Poetry, Literature
            Journaling
            Music/Poetry, Singing, Playing an instrument
            Tips/recipes for "family cooking" on a budget, affordable &
            easy recipes, smart shopping
            Anger Management
            Stress Reduction: Meditation, Relaxation, Centering Prayer

Family Floor/Playroom & Homework Helpers:

Homework Helpers, 6-7pm and Playroom 6-8pm 

We require that all volunteers who serve on the Family Floor are extremely reliable. As of January 2012, our biggest need are Friday nights from 6-8pm, 5p-6pm (Tues-Friday), and Sunday nights. 

 

Certified First Aid/CPR/AED instructor to teach staff/volunteers at Samaritan House-approximately every 6 mths.

 

St. Joseph's Veteran Center

All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Volunteers are needed to work with homeless veterans with varying degrees of mental and physical disabilities. Ideal candidates would be calm, patient, compassionate, and non-judgmental, but with excellent personal boundaries. A sense of humor is vital.

• Basic & intermediate cooking instruction

• Reseach assistants for phone surveys about community services

• Pro Bono Legal Services

• Nutritionist

• Smoking cessation instructor

• Pro Bono Massage Therapist/Chiropractor

• Individual to assist with Resume Building

• Individual to research low housing/subsidized housing options

 

The Father Ed Judy House
The Father Ed Judy House is a small housing program for single women with children who are homeless. We depend on community volunteers to help us offer a rich, supportive program to the families we serve.

 Catholic Charities Mulroy Senior Center has a lot to offer volunteers. You will have the chance to work with a diverse group of active, friendly, and fun seniors in a relaxed environment. Volunteer duties can be varied include some light food preparation, calling Bingo, helping to lead low-impact exercise, answering the phone, or picking up donations.
