Peace 'n the Streets Health & Safety Fair

Date: Saturday, August 9th 2008
Time: 11am - 3pm
Location: Mestizo Curtis Park (31st & Curtis)
Peace ‘n the Streets Health & Safety Fair advances the health, safety and well-being of both children and families who have little or no access to the most basic opportunities. This is accomplished through health checks, car seat safety checks of existing seats and installation of new seats, bicycle safety education and provision of helmets as well as education and outreach that links families with agencies that can assist them in meeting their needs. Children are better prepared for school after receiving free school supplies, medical screenings and the required immunizations. A strong, healthy family can better support the child and her/his development. One added benefit of this event is that it promotes family bonding by providing impoverished families with a fun day full of free family activities for them to enjoy together.
This year’s event included more than 60 different service agencies. The event operated between 11 – 3 (with car seats operating from 9 - 1). Catholic Charities was the lead organization; however Colorado Coalition for the Homeless Stout Street Clinic, Colorado Department of Transportation, Volunteers of America, Regis University and Denver Health played vital roles. In our 11th annual year, we were excited to have The Children’s Hospital as our lead sponsor. This support was essential to the success of the fair. In addition, there were four other funding organizations and more than 60 service organizations providing resources and activities. It is because of this high level of collaboration that this large community event is possible.
On Saturday August 9th Peace ‘n the Streets Health & Safety Fair provided medical checks, car seats, bicycle helmets, school supplies, food and snacks, family activities and education at no cost to an estimated 1,700 low-income, homeless and near-homeless urban families. 285 Volunteers helped make the day a success. Below are statistics on many of these services.
