School Based Counseling

The Catholic Charities School-Based program is a community-based counseling program that places masters and doctoral level interns within the Catholic school setting. The interns work with students in kindergarten through 8th grade, and coordinate counseling services with their families and teachers.

Working with children: Children may be seen individually or in group counseling for issues such as divorce, grief, life transitions, social skills, and anger management. Ongoing assessment and referrals for outside services are made as necessary. Occasionally interns may be invited to participate in a school-wide grief intervention following a crisis such as the death of a community member.

Working with parents: Interns strive to work closely with their clients’ families/guardians, and include them in counseling sessions as appropriate.

Working with teachers: Interns can be effective in helping teachers understand the different needs that arise in the classroom and how to manage them. Interns may be asked to lead classroom presentations on bullying, friendships, transitions to high school, conflict resolution, etc.
