Non-identifying Information

Non-Identifying Information

Who can apply?
Any member of the adoption triad, including birth parents, adoptees, adoptive parents and grandparents of a minor (under 18 years old) adoptee, biological and half-biological siblings.

In all cases the next of kin is able to search, and must give their permission if someone who is not the next of kin wants to search. For example: If a birth parent has had another child, who would be considered the sibling of the child adopted, the birth parent would have to agree to let their child search for his/her sibling who was adopted. If the birth parent does not agree, their child cannot search. If the birth parent is deceased, the child must provide a death certificate to be able to proceed with a search.

What is it?
A non-identifying summary provides details about the birth parents (for the adoptee) or adoptive family and child (for the birth parent), depending upon who is requesting the information.

The summary is written in a letter by Catholic Charities’ search counselor. It includes physical characteristics, known medical issues, and social/educational issues, as they were reported at the time of the relinquishment or adoption. Occasionally, contact has been made in the years since the relinquishment or adoption, and if this is the case, any updated information would also be included.

This information does not give names or any information that would reveal identity or clues to identity. Catholic Charities is prohibited by state law to release any identifying information, including original birth certificates.

Due to the high volume of requests, please be aware that the provision of non-identifying background information can take approximately three to six weeks from the time we receive your application.

Cost?
There is a $125 fee for a non-identifying summary to cover administrative costs, researching the file, and writing the summary. This fee is to be sent in with your application and other necessary paperwork.

How to apply?
Call (303)742-0828 or e-mail adoption@ccdenver.org to request an informational search packet, or to learn more information about the process.

In your message or e-mail, include your:
1.       Name
2.       Address
3.       Phone number
4.       Your name at the time of the adoption, if you were a birth parent. Your adoptive parents’ names, if you were an adoptee. This is necessary to verify that Catholic Charities has your records and finalized the adoption, as Catholic Charities can only provide summaries for adoptions it finalized.
